I wanted to test out some different methods of decorating Easter eggs instead of the standard dye and we had lots of fun trying them out.
I saw on Pinterest last year to bake your eggs instead of boiling on the stove. I tried it and really liked the convenience. Previously, I always worried about if my eggs had cooked long enough or too long. But now I place one egg in each muffin spot of a muffin pan and bake at 325* for 20 minutes – done. I placed the eggs in the fridge to cool except for those we were going to use for….
Melted Crayon Easter Eggs
While your eggs are still hot, write or color on the egg with a crayon. The crayon starts to melt as soon as it hits the hot egg. S thought this was so cool!
To hold the egg so that it does not move around, I used metal tongs. While the egg is still warm some of the wax may come off therefore I recommend doing this activity on a protected surface (we covered a tray in aluminum foil).
After we were done, I placed the eggs in the fridge to cool.
Note: The eggs are very hot do not let your child touch them.
Watercolor Easter Eggs
S loves to paint with watercolors so why not on eggs! Once the eggs had cooled, I turned an egg carton upside down and used it to hold the eggs while S painted. This stopped the eggs from moving around and it caught the drips from the paint. I recommend using as little water as possible to get the most vibrant colors.
S loved watching the paint drip down the sides of the eggs. This was a fun, toddler safe way to decorate eggs and there was no having to wait for the dye to color the eggs.
Shaving Cream Easter Eggs
If you are a frequent visitor you know that S LOVES shaving cream! So I thought this one would be fun and it was!
We squirted shaving cream into a shallow dish and then placed 3-4 drops of food coloring on top. Using a toothpick S swirled the colors and the shaving cream (do not mix). Then one by one S rolled the eggs in the shaving cream and placed the egg on a paper plate. After all the eggs had been colored we waited 10 minutes before wiping the shaving cream off. The color on the eggs was a very light pastel, so the dark food coloring works the best.
Note: Food coloring will dye your hands, but we used soap and water to wash off the little bit that we had on us and it washed off.
Of the three different methods, the melted crayon was our favorite – it was different from anything we had ever done before.
