Just a short train ride from Taipei, Jiufen feels like stepping into another world. Perched on the misty hills overlooking Taiwan’s northeastern coast, this former gold mining town is famous for its narrow lantern-lit alleyways, traditional teahouses, stunning ocean views, and nostalgic old-world charm. Whether you’re craving local street food, searching for the perfect photo spot, or simply looking to escape Taipei for a day, Jiufen offers an unforgettable experience.

Here’s everything you should see at one of Taiwan’s most magical destinations: Jiufen.

Jiufen Old Street
The heart of Jiufen is its bustling maze of narrow alleyways packed with food stalls, souvenir shops, and traditional architecture. It’s the perfect place to wander, snack, and soak up the town’s nostalgic atmosphere.

A-Mei Tea House
One of Jiufen’s most iconic landmarks, this beautifully lit teahouse is often associated with the aesthetic that inspired the animated film Spirited Away. Stop in for a traditional Taiwanese tea experience and stunning views.

Shengping Theater
Taiwan’s oldest surviving cinema offers a glimpse into Jiufen’s prosperous gold-mining era. The restored building showcases vintage movie memorabilia and local history.
Jishan Street
The main street running through town is lined with local food vendors selling famous Jiufen specialties like taro balls, fish balls, and peanut ice cream rolls.

Jiufen Viewing Deck
Several lookout points around town offer spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

Gold Museum
Located just a few minutes from Jiufen, this museum explores the region’s gold-mining history and includes preserved mining facilities and exhibits.
Golden Waterfall
A striking golden-colored waterfall created by mineral-rich runoff from the surrounding mountains. It’s one of the most photographed natural attractions in the area.

Stay After Dark
Many visitors leave in the afternoon, but Jiufen becomes especially magical in the evening. Red lanterns illuminate the alleyways and crowds begin to thin out in the evening. If your schedule allows, stay until after sunset.
