Kiwi Crate August 2014 Review - a wonderful kids subscription box #artsandcrafts #imaginative #kiwicrate | mybigfathappylife.com

Wow! Talk about a fun, creative, educational subscription box for kids!  We had so much fun with Kiwi Crate this month.  The theme for this month’s box was wonders of water and we received three activities.  Kiwi Crate thinks of everything that you will need to complete their projects and even include a free pair of scissors in our first box.

My Floating Sailboat

The crate included fabric paint, fabric sails (3), masts (3), a foam boat bottom and a rudder.  S painted her sail using the fabric paint and then we let the paint dry over night.  The next day, S assembled the boat with the included supplies.

Then we took the sailboat to the bathtub, the educational aspect of the activity was to see what happens when the rudder is placed at different angles.  So we first placed the rudder straight in the center and S blew on the sail.  Then we moved the rudder at different angles to see where the boat sailed to.  After exploring the purpose of the rudder, some water toys took turns sailing around the tub.Kiwi Crate August 2014 Review - a wonderful kids subscription box #artsandcrafts #imaginative #kiwicrate | mybigfathappylife.com

My Watercolor Animals

There were several different sea creatures cut out of paper included in the kit; 2 fish, a seaturtle and a seahourse.  S drew on each animal using the enclosed washable markers (Kiwi Crate even included a messy mat to color on).  Once she had completed her picture, she sprayed the paper with water and watched as the ink spread through out the paper.

Once the animals were dry, S added an eye to each side and swam the animals around the ocean.  I love the finished pieces – absolutely gorgeous!Kiwi Crate August 2014 Review - a wonderful kids subscription box #artsandcrafts #imaginative #kiwicrate | mybigfathappylife.com

Another activity to learn was to place a folded piece of paper in a cup of water, with a written line across the fold.  S chose to use a black marker.  It was so fun to watch the water pull out the different colors of the marker as it spread down the piece of paper.

Wonders of Water Extra Activities

There were a couple extra activities: learning about buoyancy, evaporation and surface tension.  To learn about buoyancy we used the enclosed clay in a bowl of water and observed it sink.  Then S shaped the clay like a boat and saw that it floated.  Next we added pennys to see how many pennys it would take to sink.

To learn about surface tension, S used the enclosed dropper to see how many drops of water could be placed on a penny and how water holds together to create a bubble on the surface of the penny.

For the evaporation, we added water to the enclosed cup and drew a line on the cup.  We let the cup sit over night and then saw how much water had evaporated.

$10 off Your First Box

I think that Kiwi Crate is worth the cost of the subscription box.  The activities are fun, creative and educational.  S is engaged in them and cannot wait to work on the projects.  In addition, there are always left over supplies.  This month we had markers, fabric paints, a spray bottle, modeling clay, a couple sheets of paper and extra fabric sails and masts.
