What to Expect When Flying Icelandair

November 15, 2017 By: mybigfathappylife

What to expect when you fly with Icelandair from the US to Europe or Europe to US along with information about a stopover in Iceland.

Last summer we flew Icelandair to Europe and on our return flight, we stopped in Iceland for a 48-hour stopover.  Being able to add an Iceland stopover to our trip was a major draw to choosing Icelandair.  I loved flying Icelandair and would highly recommend them.  I wish and hope that Icelandair expands to more cities within the US.

Children are Special

Not only do children receive a 25% discount off the ticket fare, but they also receive a kids activity packet with headphones, a complimentary meal/snack, and children’s programs on personal in-flight entertainment centers.  Between the food, activities, and movies available to my daughter she was happy, content, and did not complain during our long (and short) flights.  I think Icelandair is on to something because when the children are happy then the parents are happy too!

Reykjavik Airport

When we were waiting in line to check our luggage before our first leg of our Icelandair flight, an Icelandic couple was telling us not to panic when you get to Reykjavik Airport.  They said that the airport was chaotic, very crowded and lines will seem long, but not to worry you will make it to your flight.  Of course, that couple was right and I am so glad that they warned us.  Throughout the airport, you will find many volunteers available for questions.  You may also have to board/de-plane your flight on the tarmac because the airport does not have enough jetways for the number of flights flying in and out.

The airport is extremely clean, has a nice selection of food and beverage to choose from, everyone is friendly, and you can get free glacier water out of the fountains.

Stopover

One of the most interesting things about traveling from North America to Europe is being able to add a free stopover in Iceland.  This free layover is a great opportunity to spend a few days on this beautiful island.  When booking your ticket you will select the stopover option and then you will be able to change the second leg of your trip to another date.
