How to Build A Raised Garden Bed

April 1, 2015 By: mybigfathappylife

How to Build a Raised Garden Bed | mybigfathappylife.com

When we moved to our new house two years ago I was so excited to have enough space to be able to plant a garden.  I knew that I wanted a raised bed garden for couple reasons: limit the amount of weeds, the garden doesn’t grow into yard space, and the dog can’t get to the plants to pee on.

I find that we do not use the sides of our yard as much as the back so placement of our raised beds was quickly made on the side of house that my kitchen window faces that way I can see the vegetables grow and see if I need to pick anything.

We made sure to leave enough room around the raised bed so that the lawn mower can get through.  We also placed pavers around our raised bed so that we have a nice surface to stand on and it finishes off the area.

To make the raised bed

Our raised bed is 4 feet by 8 feet.  It’s just wide enough to be able to reach the center of the bed while standing outside.

Supplies needed:
4 6x12x2
1 4x4x8
Screws: Primeguard Exterior 3″
Weed barrier
Soil

The first step is cutting the boards down to the sizes needed.  Each 12 foot board should be cut to make one 8 foot board and one 4 foot board.  The 4×4 post should be cut into 2 foot pieces.  How to Make a Raised Garden Bed | mybigfathappylife.com

Attach the boards to the posts making sure that the top of the board is even with the top of the post.  You are basically creating a large box.  My husband assembled the raised bed upside and on it’s side at times.

We flipped the raised bed the correct way and marked where the posts were.  Then dug holes large enough for the posts.  We did not cement the posts in place and it has been extremely sturdy.

Back fill the holes and then lay down the weed barrier inside the raised bed.  You can remove the grass from the area, we chose not to.

Then we filled the raised bed with soil.  The only thing left to do is fill the bed with plants or seeds.  We have a soaker hose set up on a timer to water the garden every day.  I love my raised bed so much I ended up having my husband build a second one.
Do you plant a garden?  Happy planting!

Your raised beds are so much more sturdier and deeper than that flimsy one I bought at the home store. It’s also in the side yard. I’m going to show my son-in-law this post and see if he’ll make me a couple. My husband is not in to that sort of thing at all. 🙂

I hope you can convince your son-in-law to build you some! They are really easy and you could make it any size that you want. My parents have a couple 4 ft by 4 ft raised beds that work perfectly in their space.

We had one of these at our old townhouse, and I LOVED it. Sadly, it was one of the things that stayed when we moved. Now, we’ve got a bigger garden, but I’m going to have to get down in the dirt to pick everything!

Yay for bigger gardens! I hope you have a successful garden this year!

Looks great! We have a BUNCH of raised beds out in my Potager – Kitchen Garden. We’ve switched to hydroponics now, but we still use the raised beds for bushes and plants. Love them!

My dad used hydroponics and I am always impressed with how quickly his produce grows.

I just did my first raised garden this year and I love it. I was wondering what kind of timer are you using??

    • mybigfathappylife says

      April 7, 2015 at 2:41 pm

We actually use a battery operated timer that we picked up at Walmart. The timer is programmable and you can determine how long and how often it runs. There is also an override if you would like to turn the water on immediately or if it rains. The timer has lasted several years and we do not have to replace the battery often. This is the exact one we use from amazon: http://amzn.to/1DHsXaF

I love these raised beds! Did you use treated or untreated wood? If untreated, how has it held up? So many questions;0)

    • mybigfathappylife says

      April 7, 2015 at 2:36 pm

We used treated wood since untreated would eventually rot. The treated wood has held up well. I have been considering staining the beds since they are starting to look weathered.

Luckily you have a built in handyman! If you live in an area like I do now it is almost impossible to grow anything in the ground due to the poor soil quality – raised beds are a must. Great DIY.

    • mybigfathappylife says

      April 6, 2015 at 3:29 pm

That’s so true Krayl! We have very clay ground, so I probably wouldn’t be able to have a garden without the raised bed.

How beautiful! I wish I could have a garden but our apartment doesn’t lend itself to that. We don’t even have a patio/balcony. I’ve started to look into container gardening though, I may have room for that.

I think a container gardening would be great if you can make it work. It’s so nice to have fresh produce.
