Playing with chalk including homemade chalk has been one of S’s favorite activities for several years. We have used liquid chalk for painting the driveway, played with exploding chalk, used liquid chalk in squirt guns and more. But we had never froze chalk before so I thought it was about time we tried it.
I had found in the dollar section at Target a four pack Popsicle maker and thought that that would be perfect for our frozen chalk. Having the Popsicle maker allows the chalk to have a handle and keeps S’s fingers from getting cold.
How To Make Frozen Chalk
We gathered up our supplies to make the sidewalk chalk paint:
Cornstarch
Water
Food Coloring
To make the sidewalk chalk paint mix equal parts cornstarch and water (I usually do ¼ cup cornstarch and ¼ cup water for each color) and stir in the food coloring until you achieve your desired color. We poured the chalk into the Popsicle maker and then placed in the freezer overnight.
Creating Art
To release the frozen chalk from the Popsicle container, we ran warm water over the outside. Then we took the frozen chalk outside to the driveway. S switched between the different colors as she drew on the driveway. Her favorite was making polka dots!
Be sure to feel the chalk on the driveway after it dries! It has the smoothest texture!
The only thing I dislike about creating art with chalk is that I cannot keep it forever like a painting. So, I make sure to take lots of photos!
