Exploding Chalk Paint

July 21, 2014 By: mybigfathappylife

Exploding Chalk Paint #chalk #scienceexperiment #messyplay | mybigfathappylife.com

After seeing on Growing a Jeweled Rose how much fun they had with exploding sidewalk chalk paint, I knew that S and I had to try it too!

To make liquid chalk, we mix together equal parts cornstarch and water.  So to make the chalk exploding, we subbed out the water for vinegar.  We placed the mixture into sandwich size Ziploc bags and mixed in food coloring.

When we got outside, one by one we dumped about 1 tablespoon of baking soda into the Ziploc bags and quickly closed them.  Immediately the bags started inflating due to the reaction between vinegar and baking soda.  Make sure the Ziploc bag is completely closed or the bag will not explode.  Then place the Ziploc bag on the ground.  *Tip: make sure to remix your cornstarch and vinegar mixture before adding the baking soda, because the cornstarch likes to separate.

Soon the bag will explode with a loud pop and the chalk will ooze out of the baggie.  We had some bags that exploded really well and others that needed a little help.

The exploding chalk bags were just the beginning of fun!  S then decided to stomp in the chalk.

Next it was time to explore the chalk with her hands.  The mixture had a goop texture to it, both a solid and a liquid.

Which made it all the more fun!

The chalk mixture washed off S and the driveway easily with no staining!

Do you let your kids get messy during play?

Paris, you and your daughter is always doing such fun and creative things! I would have never thought about chalk paint. My girls are always worried about getting dirty so they don’t do messy play that much.

Wow! This looks cool. I don’t have children, but if I did, I wouldn’t mind them getting messy during play time as long as we’re at home and they can change easily. 🙂

You come up with the best things to do with your lovely daughter. And that hat is just adorable! I bet my grands would love this. It looks like so much fun and yes, I think kids should be allowed to get messy. I fondly remember making mud pies when I was a little girl.
