DIY Homemade Stocking with Pattern + Stocking Stuffer Ideas

I may have a tiny obsession with Christmas stockings! One year when I was in home-ec, I made over 20 stockings during the holidays. I loved picking out the different fabrics and making them. I ended up giving many of the stockings away to friends and I still have a couple that I hang from cupboard handles in my home.

It is amazing how you can update your holiday mantel with new stockings. This year I changed my mantel up with black and white polka dot stockings with a red lining and cuff. I love how the bold red contrasts with the polka dot. I also love the classic yet modern feel of the stockings. Stocking Stuffers

My favorite moments as a child from Christmas morning was tearing down my stocking from the mantle and taking each item out one by one. There were always so many fun goodies to be found in the stocking. I still love going through my stocking on Christmas morning. Our family gathers on the floor with our stockings in our laps and we go through our stockings together to see what everyone got. We oooh and ahhh over each surprise.

I found the BAND-AID® Brand Adhesive Bandages holiday collection in the holiday section of the store with other small stocking stuffer items at my local Target. Stocking Instructions

Print out the stocking pattern here. Iron fabric before starting. You will need 1/2 yard of exterior and lining fabric for each stocking.

For the exterior of the stocking, fold the fabric in half with wrong sides facing out. Lay the pattern piece on top and cut out the pattern with your rotary cutter or pin pattern and cut with scissors or trace and cut out. Repeat for the lining.

To assemble the body of the stocking, put the two exterior body pieces right sides together. Place the lining pieces right sides together on top of the exterior of the stocking. Pin in place and sew all four layers together with a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Turn right side out and iron.

To make the cuff, cut out a rectangle 16″ x 8″. I used the same fabric as the lining, but you could do another fabric.

Fold the fabric in half. Sew up the short side with 1/2″ seam allowance. Fold the cuff over so wrong sides are together. Place the cuff inside the body of the stocking, aligning the raw edges of the cuff with the raw edges of the body.

To make the hanger, cut a 6″x3″ rectangle out of the cuff fabric. Fold in half with right sides together and sew up the long side. Turn right side and fold in half. OR Cut a 6″ piece of ribbon and fold in half. Place the hanger between the lining and the cuff along the back body seam of the stocking. Align the raw edges of the ribbon and the body. The loop of the hanger should be facing into the body of the stocking.
