How to Make Fall Scented Playdough

September 22, 2014 By: mybigfathappylife

How to Make Fall Scented Playdough #kidsartsandcrafts #playdough #fall #autumn | mybigfathappylife.com

S loves play dough and itโ€™s always fun to make some.  This time we decided to make fall scented play dough โ€“ pumpkin pie and apple cinnamon.

My favorite way to make playdough is with a no cook recipe.  That way S can help me, since thatโ€™s half the fun โ€“ all the measuring, pouring, mixing and kneading.

Base Recipe

I make one base for every scent/flavor/color that I make.  The base of the playdough is:

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

1 tablespoon cream of tarter

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 cup of boiling water

optional: food coloring or liquid watercolors

Mix flour, salt, and cream of tarter together.  Add oil and water and mix until combined.  Roll out onto a lightly floured surface and knead.  If the playdough is sticky knead in additional flour.  *Test the temperature of the playdough before allowing children to knead.

Pumpkin Pie Playdough

For the pumpkin pie playdough, I added 1 tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice before adding the water.  We liked the natural color of the playdough, so we did not add any food coloring.  How to Make Fall Scented Playdough #kidsartsandcrafts #playdough #fall #autumn | mybigfathappylife.com

Apple Cinnamon Playdough

For the apple cinnamon playdough, I used 1 cup of apple juice instead of water and added 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon.  We added green food coloring as we were mixing.

Invitation to Play

After making the playdough, S sat down at the table with some pumpkins, silicon cupcake liners, and cookie cutter.  She immediately went to work making pumpkin pie cupcake and added a green stem to her pumpkin.

S loved smelling the playdough while she played.  I loved that the playdough looks and smells like pumpkin pie and apples.

Note: This playdough recipe is safe to be eaten, however it will not taste very good.

The smell does fade some over time, but a week later the play dough does still have its scent.  I store the playdough in Ziploc bags.

What is your favorite way to play with play dough?

I remember the days of playing with play dough. My girls use to play with it but always forget to put the cap back on after playing and the play dough would dry out. You always have such great ideas Paris! I wish I was creative like you!

I’m one of those weirdos who actually hate the scent of Play Doh, so this is awesome! I’ve always made my own play clays, and this is a fun way to make it fall oriented. Thanks for sharing at Fridays Unfolded!
