Nestled in the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass region, the Kentucky Horse Park is more than just a destination. Whether you’re a lifelong equestrian or just curious about these majestic animals, the park offers a unique blend of history, beauty, and hands-on experiences that make it a must-visit. With rolling pastures, world-class museums, and unforgettable encounters, this Lexington gem is a true horse lover’s paradise.
The Kentucky Horse Park offers two seasons: main and winter. Each season offers different activities on the schedule due to the weather. During the main season, when you purchase admission to the park, the next day is free with the exception of major events and holidays. Be sure to keep your wristband from the first day when you return on the second day.

What to Do at Kentucky Horse Park
Watch Live Demonstrations & Shows
- Hall of Champions Show: Meet retired racing champions and hear their stories.
- Equine Showcase: See different breeds in action, often with riders in period costume, and then meet the horses up close afterward.
- Equine Academy: Demonstrations on grooming, training, riding, and horse care.
- Draft Horse Presentation: Learn about heavy‑draft breeds and their work.
- Mounted Police Barn: Meet the horses used by mounted patrol and see them in action (when they’re on duty).

Meet the Horses
- Big Barn, Hall of Champions, and Breeds Barn: Meet a variety of horses in the three different barns during your visit. This was my daughter’s favorite part!

Ride a Horse or Pony
- Guided Trail Rides: A short 35‑minute ride along scenic parts of the park. Suitable even for beginners.
- Pony Rides: Great for younger riders (ages 2–10).
Explore the Museums
- Visit the International Museum of the Horse, which is one of the world’s most comprehensive museums dedicated to equine history.
- Stop by the American Saddlebred Museum to learn about Kentucky’s native horse breed and see artifacts from its legacy.
Take a Tour & Ride the Trolley
- Horse‑Drawn Trolley Tour: A short narrated trolley ride pulled by draft horses, giving you a different perspective of the grounds.
Kid-Friendly Activities
- Kids Barn: Hands-on educational activities like grooming, scavenger hunts, and interactive learning about horse care.
- Jump Course (on foot): Outside the Kids Barn, there’s a small jump course where visitors can experience a “mini” version.
Stay & Extend Your Visit
- Campground: The park operates a campground with 260 sites, amenities (pool, playgrounds, etc.), and easy access to walking or biking trails.
- Events & Shows: Check the calendar because the park hosts equestrian competitions, shows, and special seasonal events using venues like Alltech Arena and Rolex Stadium.
