Tips for Organizing a Camper | mybigfathappylife.com

Do you have a camper or are you thinking about buying one?  Organization is key with small places!  That way you can fit everything you need in and still be able to find it.  Also remember when your camper is traveling, all items need to be secured (i.e.: not left out).  Our camper is approximately 184 square feet and can sleep up to 8, however it is usually just the three of us (2 adults, 1 child).

One of my requirements when we purchased our camper was that it have a dedicated space for my daughter to sleep.  I did not want to have to put down the table or open the sofa every night.  I really like the full size bunks because the top bunk is dedicated as her play area; that way toys are not all over the camper and she still has a clean bed to sleep on.

How to Entertain Your Child While Camping | mybigfathappylife.com

If you are looking to purchase a camper, I have a post dedicated to everything you have to purchase when you buy a camper (it’s a long list!).

We have been to fifteen campgrounds/trips so far with them ranging from weekend trips to weeklong stays.  We love our camper and have never felt cramped or like we are on top of each other.  Below are my tips on how we organized our camper:

Undercarriage

Let’s start our organizing outside in the undercarriage!  We use several under the bed clear totes to hold items.  One tote is dedicated to everything sewer (minus our sewer hose which is stored in our bumper).  One has all our fresh water items: hose, water filter, water pressure regulator, 90-degree water hose elbow, a hose splitter and a bag of hose washers.  One we have dedicated to various tools, bike chains, wd-40 and other random items that we do not want just floating around our undercarriage.  We have a lot of other items in our storage including: quad chairs, a ladder and our grill.

Bedroom Area

We have three wardrobes in our camper: one on either side of our bed and one beside our pantry for the bunk beds.  The wardrobes beside our bed sloped (follows the curve of the outside of our camper, so the bottom are very deep. I tend to have lots of hanging clothes so I utilize the rod on my side of the bed, however I did put two fabric boxes in the bottom of my wardrobe to hold underwear, socks and pajamas.

My husband tends to have more folded clothes, so we placed a shelf hanging organizer from his rod.  Be sure to measure your opening before purchasing to make sure that it will fit in your space.  This allows him plenty of space to store all of his clothes.  He also has the deeper area in the back of his wardrobe where we store extra clothing for longer trips or seasonal clothing where the weather may change on us.

We also have an open shelf that goes over our bed that we store folded items, usually jeans/shorts and sweatshirts.

In the wardrobe that my daughter uses (next to the pantry), we placed a three drawer plastic tote/cart (without the wheels) inside.  Again, be sure to measure your space ahead of time.  I did put some non-stick liner down, so that the cart would not slide.  She still has room above the tote where we place a basket with toys and books, room beside for a couple hanging items and room in front where we usually place extra shoes and/or more toys.

So where do you put all your dirty clothes?  We have a space at the end of our bed before the back of the entertainment center, it’s so that we can walk around the bed.  However, when our slide is out we can access our bed from both sides of the entertainment center.  So we use the area at the end of the bed to store a hamper for our dirty clothes, my purse and a bag that goes with me in the car when we travel that holds chargers, ipad/laptop, a folder full of camping documents, etc.

Another great area for storage is if your bed lifts up.  Ours does but it’s very heavy with the mattress, memory foam topper, sheets and blanket.  I usually have to have my husband to help get items in or out.  Therefore the only thing I usually store under there are the cooler, dirty clothes once our hamper is full, an extra toilet paper package and extra package of bottled water.

Living Room

Our camper has an entertainment center with a cabinet down below.  I use plastic shoe boxes to hold cards and games, battery operated candles, scissors and tape, notebooks, markers and colored pencils and bug spray.  There is an open area under the cabinet that we use to hold shoes that we are wearing.

This post is getting really long, so I am going to continue my organization tips tomorrow with the kitchen/dining room and the bathroom.

If you have a camper, what’s your favorite organization tip?
