Recycled Paper Beads

February 9, 2015 By: mybigfathappylife

In Epcot at Walt Disney World there is a booth that sells recycled paper bead bracelets and necklaces.  The beads are made from old park maps and brochures, which is such a fun souvenir!

Of course, we had to try making our own recycled paper beads at home.  We used magazine pages which is nice and thin.  We cut the pages into triangles.  You could use old park maps, wrapping paper scraps or almost any paper but you do not want the paper to be thick.

Taking a straightened paper clip (you could use a pencil or chopstick) start wrapping the triangle around starting with the wide edge first.  Secure the start with a glue dot roller (found in the scrapbook section).

You could also use elmers glue but it would take longer to dry.  Continue winding the paper around until the whole paper is used and then secure with more glue.  To secure the beads and make them hard apply a coat of mod podge.  Once the beads are dry string them onto twine the length of a necklace or bracelet.

Then enjoy your beautiful necklace and/or bracelet.  S told me that she is a jewelry girl, so I see her getting lots of use out of her necklace and bracelet.

You and S look like you always have SO much fun! I’m hoping that my daughter will love to do crafts when she’s older so we can do stuff like this. I love this idea–it doesn’t look super messy or complicated, and jewelry gals get something new for free! 🙂

I love this creative idea! I never knew Disney had a recycling program. The maps I get from amusement parks I usually just keep.

Next time you are at Epcot you should check out the booth – it’s on the World Showcase side near the African shops. Their beads and jewelry are beautiful – I think we have 2 necklaces and a bracelet.

This is brilliant, thank you I’m pinning it as an activity to do in our activity craft hour here on the farm. I wonder if I could make the beads from leaves too for a natural necklace? Worth a go!

What a great idea. I love recycling and reuse of things so this is awesome to add to my to-do-list. I think the necklace is very cute. And the beads seems like a familyfriendly craft to do with your kids. I am stopping by from the Retro Re-Pin Party. Pinned this to my jewlery board.
