It’s officially Fall – now if only our weather here in the south would cooperate!  However the hot weather is not stopping me from decorating for Fall.  I love lots of pumpkins, the fragrance of Fall and the coziness of the season.  Decorating for Fall does not have to be expensive and I have some great tips below to help you save but still have a beautiful fireplace mantle.

When shopping at Walmart the other day, I spotted the new American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand collection.  I always love to stop by the candle aisle to smell all the fragrances especially since we are now officially in Fall!  I have fond memories of my grandmother always burning Yankee Candles because of their quality and fragrances.  Did you know that each time you burn your candle you should allow the entire top layer to become a fragrant pool of liquid wax to get the biggest, boldest scent possible?

I am very excited to be able to find American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand at a great price point and convenient to pick up at Walmart.  This week I purchased the large tumbler in ginger pumpkin pie for $14.93, the medium tumbler in buttercream frosting for $10.93 and the small tumbler in sweet and salty caramel for $4.93.  I found the American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand in two different places in both the regular candle aisle and the seasonal section of the store.

Tips on How to Decorate for Fall on a Budget

  • Pull pieces from other rooms in your house and re-purpose them.
    • Use a cream plate to hold candles.
    • Use a cake plate, candle holder or a stack of books to elevate pumpkins and to create different heights on your mantel.
    • Use cream pottery pieces intermixed with your fall decor to stretch your decorating, create different heights and add different textures.
  • Add Fall fragrances with the new American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand collection from Walmart. *always follow instructions on candles carefully
  • Find natural items in your yard like rose hips, acorns and pine cones to fill vases, re-purposed American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand jars or to fill a container around a candle.

  • Purchase Fall decorations that are reusable from year to year.  Some of my pumpkins that I use to decorate are at least 10 years old!  I always love to buy my Fall decor when it is on sale or my favorite yet is to buy at the end of the season when it is clearanced for next year.

How to Decorate Your Mantle for Fall

  • Gather all the items you plan to decorate with and spread them out so you can see them all.
  • Take everything off your mantle and clean it, so you have a fresh slate to start with.

  • Create different heights and depths by placing items in back and in front and next to items of different heights.

  • Spread your colors out and in odd numbers.  For example, I have three green items and three cream items.

  • Hang battery operated lights with Command Hooks from 3M.  Place the hook back on the top of the mantle. Make sure to hide the battery pack behind a pumpkin.

  • Then place your American Home™ by Yankee Candle® brand across the mantle.
  • When all the large pieces are placed, add berry picks tucked in and around the pumpkins.

How to Remove Wax from Candle Jars/Holders

If you would like to save money and reuse the candle jars for other projects like to hold acorns, rose hips, etc, I have some tips on removing the wax below:

  • Once your candle has burned as long as possible, wait for the wax to dry.
  • Place your candle on a heat resistance surface with either newpaper or thick paper plate underneath it.
  • Boil water; I used a measuring cup in the microwave for 2 minutes.
  • Pour boiling water into the candle jar/holder *be extremely careful – boiling water will burn you!
  • Leave your candle to cool.  You should see the wax bubbling to the surface.

  • Once cool, you can remove the top layer of wax.
  • If your jar still has wax in it, repeat the steps above.
  • Fill with acorns, rose hips and other bits collected from outside.

I always start with a protective runner. I quilt, so I usually use a quilted table runner, but this year I used a strip of burlap. VERY inexpensive at WalMart or JoAnn. Hem or just run a row of tight stitching around it and fringe the ends if you like. Any fabric will work. I don’t want to damage the mantle, especially if I am using candles or real pumpkins or foliage. Besides, it looks better.
I have some handmade stuffed pumpkins and some silk flowers I use every year (also very cheap at WalMart), and I have picked up many decorative items – especially loose silk leaves and some garland – from the Dollar Tree. I keep the autumn decorations in a Rubbermaid tote and bring them out in the fall.

Thanks so much for the tips Cathe! I always pack all my Fall items together in their own tote too!

I love how you decorated your mantel! Displaying candles on a plate with acorns and other scatter is such a cute idea. I’ll have to go collect some acorns from all the trees that are dropping them like crazy right now!

Thank you so much Haley! I hope you have fun collecting acorns!
